“Fat glorious fat….bulletproof coffee and thrusters”, that one’s for you #crossfit bods!

On a more serious note, Fats…love them or hate them, you bloody need them!

Lets get over the 1980s health scare mongering…and get stuck in to the good fats that is!

Although fat has the highest kcal per gram an active individual should never reduce fat intake below 25% of their total diet. On the flip-side, the latest craze for super high fat intake is also misguided – nutrition facts right there! Moderation and common sense should win when deciding on the fat content of your diet, so stick to between 25-40%.

Your primary focus should be on omega 3 fats from fish, grass fed beef and lamb and fish oil tablets, then monounsaturated fats from olive oil, avocados and nuts, and then your final thought will be saturated fat, which will be well accounted for in anyone’s diet with a good protein content without even having to focus on it as a fat source.

Again, balance is key, as unsexy as it sounds, lets not be extreme for any particular fat source, they are all important, but remember……

Fat contains 9 calories per gram.

Ideal Fat Sources
• Nuts & seeds – Fantastic natural fat sources that come with a plethora of micronutrients.
• Dairy – Full fat sources such as cream, butter, yogurt, milk, ghee and hard cheeses. Grass fed wherever possible such as milk from Jersey cows or alternatively goat products are great
• Fruits – such as avocados and olives
• Oils – Best to opt for organic cold pressed virgin oils where possible such as coconut, avocado, ghee, nut oils and olive oil (Use extra virgin olive oil for salads/dressings)
• Coconut oil
• Fish oil supplement – If you don’t like the taste of fresh fish go for a fish oil supplement as part of your daily regime.
